New Sermon Illustrations and Sunday Soundbytes

Announcement

A new survey finds that one in five American teens has “sexted” … that means sent or received sexually suggestive photos through cell-phone text-messages or via e-mail. Most teens who “sexted” sent the photos to girlfriends/boyfriends—unwise—but 11% sent them to strangers—really asking for trouble.

I suppose what’s positive about this report is that four out of five, which is 80%, said they hadn’t participated in this practice. I would like to think churchgoing teens make up a big part of that group.

Guilty!

This past week, Bernard Madoff was given a sentence of 150 years for cheating investors out of $13 billion. One hundred fifty years seems like a long time, and there’s little question but what Mr. Madoff will die in prison, but his sentence is nothing compared to someone having to spend eternity apart from God. Please don’t have the great judge of the universe declare you guilty of rejecting His Son Jesus Christ. The consequences are far too grave to make that mistake.

What’s the Subject of this Text for Bible Sermons?

“All right, I’m going to give you a short text, and I want you to tell me what its subject is.” (I don’t know how many times I’ve said those words when working with a group of ministers.) “The text is Psalm One. Here’s how it reads in the NIV.”

1 Blessed is the man
who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked
or stand in the way of sinners
or sit in the seat of mockers.
2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD,
and on his law he meditates day and night.
3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither.
    Whatever he does prospers.
4 Not so the wicked!
    They are like chaff
    that the wind blows away.
5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.
6 For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked will perish.

After a minute or two of silence, hands start going up.

“I think the subject is The Man Blessed by God.”

“Person Blessed,” says another. “It could be a man or a woman.

“Okay, The Person Blessed by God,” agrees the pastor with the original idea.

“I concur.”

“Me too.”

Another pastor somewhat hesitantly says, “I think it should be The Way of the Righteous. Look at verse 6, “For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous.”

“Okay,” I say, “The Way of the Righteous or The Person Blessed by God. Any other ideas?”

Everyone seems satisfied.

I tell them that either one works for me. They’re both good answers. “Which do you think your congregation would rather hear a sermon on … The Way of The Righteous or The Person Blessed by God?”

The Person Blessed by God wins by a wide margin!

Kentucky Fried Chicken has expanded its menu to include grilled chicken,
And Pizza Hut has added pasta to what it sells,
And McDonald’s fast food new serves up designer coffees,
Who’s to say our church can’t expand its services and add _____________?

Tell Me Another One – Sunday Soundbyte

The devil doesn’t usually inform you until later about the fees he charges for his wares. He’s like some banks when your checking account has an overdraft. Instead of calling or e-mailing, they mail you a letter, which takes several days to get to you. It reads that “…on such-and-such a date your account had an overdraft of $2.12. We are charging you a flat fee of $27.00 a day until you deposit enough to bring your account into the black. Remember that we are here to serve you in any way we can.”

“SURE you are!” you reply sarcastically as you toss the letter into the wastepaper basket. And that ought to be your response to the devil too!
