Five Age Groups

As I prepare my sermon for this Sunday, I have five different members of the congregation in mind. I picked these five individuals because they represent the following age groups: kids under 13, teens, 20- to 35-year-old, 35-55, and 55 and above.

In our church the “20- to 35-year-old” category is the biggest one. The “kids under 13” and “adults over 55” are the two smallest groups.

The people I’ve chosen to represent the five groups are only reminders that I need to be relevant to this five if I want to keep everyone’s interest as I speak.

The reason for keeping these people in mind as I prepare what I’ll say is to help me relate to everyone as much as possible. I’m not speaking to a nondescript gathering of people. Rather, the group is made up of specific individuals who are listening with their own set of life experiences, problems and interests.

As I prepare what I will say, I have a feeling that if I can keep the interest of the five I have chosen, I’ll be able to capture the attention of just about everyone present. That’s not as easily done as most preachers think, but I’m working at it!
