Here’s a short quiz from the Old Testament. Name two men who held up the arms of Moses when they got weary. Remember how the Israelites won the war against the Amalekites as long as Moses’ arms were held high? But they got tired and needed help. And who were those two guys?
The answer: they were Aaron and Hur. That story is found in Exodus 17:12.
I want you to know that during the Second Great Awakening in this land (1790), church people formed what they called “Aaron and Hur Societies” to hold up the arms of their ministers in prayer. In fact, they covenanted to pray a half-hour every Saturday night for the worship service the next morning. And they were up early the next day to pray a half-hour again before going to church.
The lesson we learn from this history of revival is that prayer frees the Spirit to move in a marvelous way.
