Yesterday, I introduced a text from Acts 23. This text relates to the second God Hunt category. Just by way of review, the four categories that display God’s work in our everyday world include the following:
- Any Obvious Answer to Prayer.
- Any Unexpected Evidence of His Care.
- Any Help to do God’s Work in the World … and …
- Any Unusual Linkage or Timing.
So, the text from Acts 23:12-23 relates to the category: “Any help to do God’s work in the world.”
I’ve never had forty impassioned zealots dead set on doing me in. If I did, it would alarm me to say the least. To hear that they had all vowed to fast until they had actually rubbed me out, would only add to my feelings of anxiety and dread.
But in this story God intervenes. Some young kid, not one of those forty thugs would be prone to even look at twice, heard them boasting and realizes that it’s his Uncle Paul they’re talking about. And because of his love and concern, he immediately spills the beans to the Romans who, when it comes to a show of force, don’t like to be shown up. That’s why …
Verse 23: Then he called two of his centurions and ordered them, “Get ready a detachment of two hundred soldiers, seventy horsemen and two hundred spearmen to go to Caesarea at nine tonight. Provide mounts for Paul so that he may be taken safely to Governor Felix.”
That’s Roman protection for you, and it’s also divine protection for you!
By way of review—and as I mentioned just a moment ago—the God Hunt, simply defined, is choosing to recognize the Lord’s involvement any time He intervenes in our everyday lives.
Paul could have boasted, “Isn’t it something how observant my young nephew is!” and never thought to have seen God’s hand at work in what took place. I don’t believe the apostle made that mistake.
Examples of God’s unique touch on your life abound—but you have to train yourself to see them. For example: You’re putting together your Sunday School lesson, but you need an illustration that will tie everything together. Then as you drive home from work, you turn the radio on to your local Christian station and hear a story that works just perfectly. Coincidence? No! That’s an example of God’s Help to do His work in this world.
Another example : You need work done on your car and the estimate is $1,800. Driving it is getting to be dangerous, but you don’t have that kind of money. Then a check comes in the mail that’s a settlement on something from two years back that you had totally forgotten about. The total of the settlement comes to—you guessed it—$1,800. The truth is it’s a much larger amount than what you ever expected to get. And hopefully, you don’t just say, “Isn’t this a coincidence!” Not now anyway, because what it’s an obvious “God Hunt Sighting”!
“But what if it really was a coincidence?” you ask.
So it could also have been a coincidence that Paul’s nephew was at just the right place at just the right time to hear what he heard, but the chances seem greater that it was a genuine God Hunt sighting.
Give credit to the Lord. Even if it only was a coincidence, I figure that crediting God will make up a little for the many times He did work but I totally missed his wonderful involvement in my everyday world.
Tomorrow’s blog post will be our usual mid-week break. I’ll be sharing a “Preaching Tip” for pastors. But then on Thursday, we’ll pick up this subject once again and I’ll have more to say about this Acts 23 passage. Okay?
