Visiting a Friend

A while back, I took a 200-mile train trip to visit a farmer in southern Illinois. He taught me in Sunday School back when I was growing up. His wife was dying, and I wanted to say, “You two really helped me a lot. Bless you both!”

I sense that good Sunday School teachers aren’t thanked as much as they should be. But, as the planting of this faithful farmer paid off in my life, I believe the work of many current Sunday School teachers will eventually bring a good harvest in the lives of others as well.

I’m glad I took the time and spent the money for that trip. These people are both with the Lord now. But I got a chance to say, “Bless you in Jesus’ name” before the opportunity was forever gone.

And, so can you thank those who have impacted your life for the Kingdom. Be sure to do so before the opportunity is lost.

I am grateful that I continue to hear how positively readers are responding to my latest book entitled The Sermon Sucking Black Hole—Why You Can’t Remember on Monday What Your Minister Preached on Sunday. This book is available at Amazon.com by clicking here.

In this book, I offer some solid tips to the people sitting in the congregation to help them remember what their pastor has said from the pulpit.

I Enjoy Going to Church

When I go to church, I really enjoy talking to friends I’ve known over the years. I like to sing along with the congregation. I don’t sing much during the week. But in church—well, my voice kind of blends with all the others of the congregation, and I like that.

But most of all, when I go to church, I look forward to hearing the Lord speak to me, and reminding me about what really matters in life. This could happen while listening to the Scriptures being read, during a sermon, hearing a solo, celebrating Communion. God speaks in many ways.

But, if He doesn’t speak, if the supernatural encounter doesn’t occur, then for me, anyway, church isn’t all I want it to be.

As I start thinking about services this weekend, especially at this significant time of year, I just wanted to remind myself of these things and maybe you as well.

Preparing a Visitor

A friend from another country accepted my invitation to go to church. This gentleman is not a believer. I am. This is not the first time I’ve invited this person to come, but it could be the last time he ever does.

So I’ve been in prayer, but I’ve also called friends and said, “I have a guest coming this Sunday who’s not a believer. Please come up and meet him, and talk slowly because the English language is somewhat new to him.”

I’m confessing that when I was younger, I would expect people to do this without letting people know ahead of time what was happening. How dumb of me.

Poor communication is a sign of dysfunction in a family or in a church family. The more we work together and keep each other informed, the more healthy the church is going to become.

Faithful Proclaimers

Hey, it’s always been that way. Some people just dislike what the church teaches because it goes against what they want to hear.

Way back in Old Testament days, the prophet Micah wrote, “If a liar and deceiver comes and says, ‘I will prophesy for you plenty of wine and beer,’ well he would be just the prophet for these people.” Why? Because apparently such a preacher would say what most of the people back then wanted to hear.

I say, praise the Lord for ministers who speak God’s words regardless of whether or not they’re liked. I affirm all pastors who prayerfully do their best to represent the Lord by proclaiming His truth, even when His thoughts are not what most of the people may want to hear.
