He was blind, this preacher friend and in his 70s. His eyes appeared normal. But, he was blind, and he was crying. “David,” he said, “I want so much to see the day you were talking about.” He was speaking about seeing a great revival sweep this land.

That’s what my subject had been at the ministers’ meeting he attended. This older minister’s sensitive spirit touched me. His tears were beautiful. Well past retirement age, now he preachers Sundays at a small trailer park. It’s volunteer work for him. Yet, he wants to live long enough to see revival sweep the church.

Oh, Lord, give us more men like this. And let him be like old Simeon in Scripture, who was spared until your special day of revelation came.

I’m just one person, and there’s only so much I can do. But, because I can’t meet all the needs I see, doesn’t mean I can’t effectively care for some of them.

Now, churches are like people. They, too, have limitations. If churches can’t meet all the needs they would like, it doesn’t mean they can’t minister effectively. The secret is to know what the church can do well, and also when it’s being stretched beyond its limits. When it’s right to add a new program, and also when it’s best to vote: “No. We’ve already taken on too much.”

Because another church has a drama program doesn’t mean your church should. Or, because the church has always had a scouting program, that it has to continue.

Learning your limits—it’s a great lesson for an individual to master, and also for church congregations to master.

Okay, back to the basics. Everyone knows these things, but a quick review could prove helpful.

• Get to church early this weekend, and it will enhance your worship experience. Don’t arrive late.
• Before you leave the house, eat a good breakfast and you won’t be thinking about food all through the service.
• If you get to bed early the night before, you won’t yawn nearly as much.
• In the car, on the way, say pleasant things to family members. And that’s better than bringing up something that will make someone upset or angry.
• Then, setting aside time to pray for the service will raise your level of expectancy that God can do something special.

Do these things this Sunday, and every Sunday, and you will definitely enhance your worship experience. And, just imagine how much that will please the Lord.

Want to feel like you don’t fit? Well, just go with your wife to her high-school class reunion. Unless you graduated from the same school and the in the same year, all evening long you could really feel out of it. All the people present have so much in common. They are completely engaged in talking about experiences you weren’t a part of.

Would you believe sometimes that’s how new church visitors feel? They’re the odd ones out. They’re the ones who can’t relate to the experiences so common to everyone else there.

I’m convinced one of the skills we need to develop in our churches is making visitors feel more welcome—to feel as if they really belong. It’s avoiding “coded language” that only the regular attenders understand. It’s making sure conversations contain fuller explanations, instead of assuming people know all the background. It’s a host of conscious efforts to genuinely include everyone in what’s going on in the church.

This weekend, if you see someone who looks like a visitor, go up and introduce yourself and say, “I’ve been here at the church for a while. If you’re new, can I answer any questions?” Or, “If you would like me to, I can tell you what I really like about this church.”
