Are You Teachable?

This past week I attempted to give advice to one of my grandsons. He was working on a Sudoku problem. “Let me show you a little trick,” I said to him. “It will help you when you get stuck like this.” Soon it became obvious to me that he didn’t want my help. He was going to do this puzzle on his own even if it took him all day.

The experience prompted me to look at myself to see how open I am to the help of others. My conclusion was that as a young man I was a whole lot like my grandson. But somewhere along the way, I’m not sure when, I came to realize that I could learn a lot from others if I just opened myself to what they had to share.

Over the years I have worked with many different preachers. Some of them are still like my grandson was this last week. They’re going to do things their own way, even if the attendance is dropping and they have put their church in jeopardy. Talk to them about other approaches to sermonizing and the conversation is over in a matter of minutes.

On the other hand, there are those who are open to the expertise of someone else. They listen closely to what such teachers have to say. They weigh this input and decide what has value for them and what doesn’t. They continue to learn alternative ways of approaching things.

Would you believe there are exceptional preachers in both categories? But, I believe by far the greater number are in group two.

What about you?

Appropriate Questions

If I had an important sermon to preach, I don’t think I would deliver it on a weekend when most of my people were away. It just makes sense to carefully pick the Sunday or Sundays when that key message or series will have its maximum impact.

In the previous Preaching Tip I suggested that the Sunday following Labor Day weekend would be a good time to begin a key sermon series. A second optimum time would be as the New Year approaches.

This year the four Sundays of Advent are November 28th, December 5th, 12th, and 19th. Christmas Day is on Saturday the 25th. I would probably introduce my next key preaching emphasis on Sunday the 26th and let people know the overall response I would be calling for in the new series. This way they would hear it prior to the end of 2010 and before the start of the New Year. This would be in the context of them starting fresh with a new challenge for 2011. I would then continue the new emphasis through as many Sundays as needed in January and February.

Once again, the reason for making mention of a matter like this is that it’s wise to always be thinking ahead of where you want to be leading your people. That’s in contrast to just figuring out week by week what you want to preach on the following Sunday. Key series should be planned some months in advance just like key seasons such as Christmas and Easter are.

If we were getting together for breakfast I’d not only be asking you “What are you preaching this coming Sunday?” I’d also want you to be able to tell me your plans for this coming September, for Advent/Christmas, and then for the series you’ll preach once the New Year is in view. If you didn’t know the answers, I’d ask you to be ready to hear the same questions the next time we got together.

Correct Timing

It was the right thing to say, but the wrong time to say it. You know what that’s all about, don’t you?

In your role as pastor, this is also true regarding your preaching schedule. Key sermon series can’t always be preached just whenever you want. You need to pick the best time for maximum impact.

Re-said, the summer months are probably not when you want to preach what’s really been burning in your heart, because many of your families will be away on vacation. Certain seasons of the year, such as Christmas and Easter, also carry with them strong parishioner expectations.

In my thinking, one of the best times for a key extended preaching series begins on the Sunday following Labor Day weekend. This year that time frame would begin on September 12th. The summer will be mostly behind in people’s minds. The kids will be starting back in school. And, adults will be settling back into their normal routines. If there is anything of key importance you want to preach to your people, I believe this is one of the very best times of the year to do that.

Why bring up such a thought? Because now is the time to start praying and thinking about how you will use those four, five, six, seven (or whatever) Sundays to their optimum advantage.

“What is it Jesus very much wants to say to this congregation through me, His servant?” That’s the kind of question you need to begin strategically wrestling with even now.

One More Day

“This could be an awesome message if I just had one more day to prepare.”

Ever find yourself thinking this way?

Unfortunately, this thought usually comes to preachers on Saturday nights, and when that’s the case, all the wishing in the world won’t give them an extra day.

The hard truth is that there will always be six days between Sundays—no more, no less! The only way to get one more day to make a good message awesome is to start your preparation earlier in the week. You see, if the thought, “This could be an awesome message if I just had one more day to prepare!” comes to you on a Friday night instead of on Saturday, you would still have that “one more day!”

This is not a problem unique to ministers. Many people have deadline oriented jobs. And they either learn to get on top of their schedules, or they face the consequences.

Getting behind is not usually a matter of pastors being lazy. The problem is more often they’re busy doing things that aren’t as important as what they really should be doing. And for preaching pastors, one of the really important jobs they need to stay on top of is sermon preparation. So, either they value establishing priorities and starting early on their assignments, or they live their lives constantly doing less-than-their-best last minute work.

Would you believe that some of the busiest and best preachers are already working on sermons two and three weeks ahead?
