Correct Timing

It was the right thing to say, but the wrong time to say it. You know what that’s all about, don’t you?

In your role as pastor, this is also true regarding your preaching schedule. Key sermon series can’t always be preached just whenever you want. You need to pick the best time for maximum impact.

Re-said, the summer months are probably not when you want to preach what’s really been burning in your heart, because many of your families will be away on vacation. Certain seasons of the year, such as Christmas and Easter, also carry with them strong parishioner expectations.

In my thinking, one of the best times for a key extended preaching series begins on the Sunday following Labor Day weekend. This year that time frame would begin on September 12th. The summer will be mostly behind in people’s minds. The kids will be starting back in school. And, adults will be settling back into their normal routines. If there is anything of key importance you want to preach to your people, I believe this is one of the very best times of the year to do that.

Why bring up such a thought? Because now is the time to start praying and thinking about how you will use those four, five, six, seven (or whatever) Sundays to their optimum advantage.

“What is it Jesus very much wants to say to this congregation through me, His servant?” That’s the kind of question you need to begin strategically wrestling with even now.
