“I was glad when they said unto me…” – Part 1

Visiting Circle Church for the first time, you would have been immediately aware of obvious physical differences from the usual church sanctuary—hundreds of folding chairs arranged semi circular fashion, each with an ash tray fastened on the back; little boys intently putting hymnals on every other seat; the Teamsters’ insignia squarely centered above the front platform; a long table holding a metal lectern substituting for a pulpit; a jumble of wires leading to microphones, tape recorders, and a slide or overhead projector; a movie screen serving as backdrop for it all.

As the hall filled, you would have been unable to ignore the variations of skin color. In this era of the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, you might take special note of the mixed couples—black/white, Oriental/Latin American—certainly of the racial composition of the staff as they take their place on the one-step platform.

If you were used to a traditional church, the predominantly youthful look of the congregation would surprise you, as well as the unusual proportion of expectant mothers! The wild assortment of styles from that time period—maxi skirts and minis, jeans and striped bell bottoms, pant suits, saris, African caftans, beards (and bald heads)—would not go unnoticed.

Maybe with some relief you would observe that the “straights,” or “squares,” were amply represented. A young man with long hair and sandals passes; you might have been even more surprised by his presence if you knew that he had been accepted by Wycliffe Bible Translators for missionary translation work. Looking around, you probably would agree with some of our young men who claimed that the prettiest girls in the city attended Circle Church.

Circle Church -- Order of Worship

Suddenly the choir begins to sing a Capella from the rear of the auditorium. As the service continues it may be strictly offbeat—something unlike anything you have experienced in your years of attending church. Or, depending on the Sunday, it could be more traditional in form, with the sermon an emphatic plea for a greater Christian social consciousness. From the moment of the prelude to the last chord following the benediction, however, you would probably be aware that a single basic theme had been expressed. You might also conclude there had been a plan behind the entire hour; it hadn’t simply “happened.”

Why Do We Have Church Anyway? – Part 28

One of the reasons it is so difficult to implement any new ideas from the exciting multitude which are beginning to explode everywhere is that we have no basic philosophy of operation from which to work.

Consequently, the new ideas, which are excellent in their own right, serve only to confuse our already disoriented outlook. We major on “parts” rather than attempting to look at the “whole” of the problem.

It is easy to see why the local church is experiencing difficulties.

Does the normal congregation carry on meaningful interaction? The answer is usually no!

The prayer and worship are seldom inspiring or significant, and the gifts of the Holy Spirit are avoided like the plague.

If what I have shared in this particular set of blog posts is truly the way a local church should function, then it is no wonder our problems are of an immense nature.

Tough Job, But Important

Toward the end of last year, I heard one of my favorite preachers give what I would call a “C-” message. It surprised me, because over the years I’ve heard him deliver nothing but what I would classify as “A’s” and “A+’s.”

I wondered if he sensed that this time his message was below-average. Does he have someone who kindly tells him when a given sermon isn’t up to par?

I’m not even sure Jesus would have said, “Once again you represented me well by what you said.” I have a feeling our Lord would have told him, “You backed off from how I would have put things. And, I think that was because you didn’t want to talk about mankind’s problem of sin.”

Anyway, the experience reminded me that every minister needs someone who regularly and truthfully evaluates his or her preaching. This isn’t an easy job to do, and it’s not always appreciated, either. But someone who does this, in a sensitive and timely and intelligent and gracious fashion, is a great gift from the Lord.

If such an individual offered to fill that role on your behalf, would you turn him or her down? Think it through before quickly saying “No!” The Lord may be offering you a gift you sorely need!

Why Do We Have Church Anyway? – Part 27

The Church at Work

Acts 2:42-47 is a wonderful illustration of the principles these blog posts have discussed so far. The initial role of the local church is to fill the need for Christian fellowship. Note Acts 2:42:

“And they devoted themselves to… fellowship.”

Insert Diagram FC_Dia_08_sm.jpg How the Local Church FunctionsThe local church speaks to God through corporate worship and prayer. Notice these portions of Acts 2:42-47:

“And they devoted themselves to…the breaking of bread and the prayers…praising God.”

Insert Diagram FC_Dia_09_sm.jpg How the Local Church Functions God speaks to and through the local church by means of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. And, check this summary from Acts 2:42-45, 47:

“And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching…and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles. And all who believed were together and had all things in common; and they sold their possessions and goods and distributed them to all, as any had need…And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.”

From our point of view at Circle Church, it was not adequate to say that the job of the local church is to build up the saints and evangelize the world. This answer is much too simplistic. That is why I have spent considerable time developing these points and repeating the chart, because once these thoughts are clearly understood, some very logical implications follow.
