The Church at Work
Acts 2:42-47 is a wonderful illustration of the principles these blog posts have discussed so far. The initial role of the local church is to fill the need for Christian fellowship. Note Acts 2:42:
“And they devoted themselves to… fellowship.”
The local church speaks to God through corporate worship and prayer. Notice these portions of Acts 2:42-47:
“And they devoted themselves to…the breaking of bread and the prayers…praising God.”
God speaks to and through the local church by means of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. And, check this summary from Acts 2:42-45, 47:
“And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching…and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles. And all who believed were together and had all things in common; and they sold their possessions and goods and distributed them to all, as any had need…And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.”
From our point of view at Circle Church, it was not adequate to say that the job of the local church is to build up the saints and evangelize the world. This answer is much too simplistic. That is why I have spent considerable time developing these points and repeating the chart, because once these thoughts are clearly understood, some very logical implications follow.
