Daring to Dream Again: Make God’s Dreams… – Part 1

Make God’s Dreams For Us Our Dreams As Well—Part 1

A lot of people daydream about someday striking it rich. They fantasize how they’ll spend their millions. Keeping that dream alive must be important, because some would-be millionaires actually gamble with their hard-earned money.

As an adult, for me the odds of winning a state lottery seem infinitesimally small. So I’m not tempted to save my money for a “glamorous fun-filled visit” to a gambling casino. I don’t care if it’s run by the Mafia or the government-count me out.

But back when I was in upper elementary school, a carnival came to our area in southern Illinois. The traveling company set up its wares in the big field at 30th and Main on the east edge of town. Our house was on 27th, just a couple of blocks away, so we neighborhood kids got to witness everything firsthand.

The giant Ferris wheel was the first attraction to go up. It was awesome. Then the tents and concession stands began to form a midway. Last, a huge net was hung on supports. It was designed to catch “Zaccheeni, the human cannonball.” Each night he was shot from what looked like a cannon mounted on the back of a big flatbed truck. Because his flight path took him up over the Ferris wheel, I’m told almost everyone waited around to see what would happen.

The carnival officially opened on a Friday night, and I recall as a boy being in bed and hearing the music over the loud speakers. My folks said we could go during the day but not in the evening. So early the next morning I rendezvoused with friends, and we were off to see the wonders.
