The Joy of Anticipation

In September my wife and I will be traveling with friends to Italy. That two-week trip will include time in Rome, Pompeii, Florence, Venice, Verona, and Milan. We have previously been to all but one of these cities, but we are thrilled about returning and, this time, sharing these pleasures with close friends.

The point I’m making is that planning ahead gives us something to look forward to. It also breaks us out of the normal every-week routine and adds a certain sense of excitement to life.

The same can be true in regard to church work for both pastors and their people. The sooner you can tell your congregation your preaching plans for September and October, the more everyone’s attention begins to build for that shared experience.

Do you have in mind yet a special preaching series for that time? What topic do you think your people would really look forward to hearing you preach on?

Yes, yes, I know you still have this coming Sunday’s sermon to prepare. But, why not start brainstorming now with staff, or key church members, about a unique series that could kick off the Sunday following Labor Day?

If you don’t make those plans now, the opportunity will pass you by and your church will miss out on the joy of anticipating something a bit out of the ordinary.
